Today, we honour the sacrifices and celebrate the lives of Garry Cunningham, Brian Peters, Malcolm Rennie, Greg Shackleton and Tony Stewart on the 38th anniversary of their murders.
The five men were murdered in Balibó by Indonesian forces on October 16th, 1975 to prevent them from reporting on that country’s impending invasion of Timor-Leste.
Fellow journalist Roger East was murdered in Dili six weeks later, while in Timor-Leste to investigate the men’s disappearance.
They gave their lives in service of the truth. Lest we forget.
