Two Extraordinary Volunteer Opportunities in Balibo, Timor-Leste

Honouring the legacy of the Balibo Five, Balibo House Trust continues to support social, economic and cultural development in Timor-Leste.

We are thrilled that from January 2026, two inspiring volunteer assignments will open in Balibo through the Australian Government funded Australian Volunteers Program:

Strategic Advisor & Mentor – an exciting opportunity for an experienced community-sector leader who enjoys sharing knowledge and building people up. You’ll mentor local managers at the Balibo Community Centre, helping to grow confidence and leadership while also strengthening systems, governance, community reach and impact.
Apply on the Australian Volunteers website

Project Officer (Sustainability, Tech & English Mentor) – a life-changing early-career opportunity for someone with energy, a passion for practical solutions, and know-how in new tech and sustainability.
Apply on the Australian Volunteers website

Applications close 8 October.

Both roles come with full support from Australian Volunteers — flights, insurance, accommodation, allowance, induction and in-country networks. A rare chance to contribute skills that strengthen community and leave lasting value in Timor-Leste.

Visit Balibó

By far the best way to understand the Balibó Five story and the work of the Trust is to experience it first-hand.  You can stay in the spectacular Balibó Fort Hotel, take a tour of the Fort Heritage and Cultural Museum, or Australian Flag House (now the Balibó Community Learning Centre), learn about the sacrifices of the Balibó martyrs at a hillside memorial,  or just wander the town at your own pace.

The nearby sukos (villages) of Cova, Leolima and Leohitu will give you a unique view of village life in Timor-Leste.  Balibó is situated in Bobonaro District, a stunning 2.5 hour coastal drive west of Dili, near the border with West Timor.

Donate goods and services
Donations of goods and services are always welcomed in Timor-Leste.  Books, toys, furniture and bedding, learning materials, medical equipment, computers and clothes are just some of the things that can find a useful second life in Timor-Leste.
